Gearing Up for Spring

February 26, 2013

Spring is right around the corner, and we’re gearing up at HERA.  Our annual Climb4LifeSM series kicks off in Boston March 2-3, followed by Colorado June 22, Washington, DC July 13, and Salt Lake City September 13-15.  These rock climbing and hiking weekends are HERA’s signature events that raise funds for HERA and raise awareness about ovarian cancer.  Registration is open for Boston, and our other three weekends will open soon.  Save the date and come to a Climb4Life near you!

Besides the climbs, we’ve got other cool events on the schedule for spring.  HERA is proud to announce a new partnership with the Mother’s Day 5K in Denver. Now in it’s fourth year, this fun event celebrates moms and grandmoms with a 5K in Denver’s beautiful City Park. Ladies can run, walk, or stroll; make it a day of activity for the whole family including dads and kids. A portion of the registration fees will support HERA and participants are encouraged to fundraise. The event is scheduled Sunday, May 12 at 9:00 am. Registration is $30 for individuals through April 15; $90 for a family (maximum of four people). After April 15, the fees are $35/individual and $115 for a family. All registrants receive free admission to the Denver Zoo on Mother’s Day!  We need volunteers:  email us if you can help:

Want something a little more challenging?  HERA’s longtime sponsor, Petzl, is again donating one team entry to each Ragnar Relay.  Over 2 days and 1 night, teams of 12 run across 200 miles of the country’s most scenic terrain. Pair that with crazy costumes, inside jokes, a great finish line party and unforgettable stories. Some call it a slumber party without sleep. We call it Ragnar.  Races sell out very quickly; click here to learn more.

How about something in between?  The annual Run Like Girl race series is coming soon to a city on the east coast.  These 4-mile runs encourage women and girls to become strong and active and take charge of their health.  A cornerstone of HERA’s annual fundraising efforts, check out the RLaG series here:

Speaking of gear, La Sportiva just launched the new HERA Helios running shoe as one of our newest Partners in Action.  For every pair sold, Sportiva will donate $10 to HERA.  Now you can purchase one of the best lightweight running shoes La Sportiva has to offer while supporting HERA’s mission.  Don’t you need new shoes for spring? So, Why Do We Climb, Hike, or Run?

We do it because ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. We do it because ovarian cancer ranks fifth as the cause of cancer deaths in women. We do it because there is no early detection test, and it affects women of all ages and all backgrounds. We do it to stop the loss of women’s lives. Your participation and support keep us on track and on mission. Of the funds HERA raises, 88% supports our scientific research grants and our community grants.

Spring is right around the corner.  Get geared up!  Join us at a HERA event near you and help us raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
