Run Like A Girl 8K Comes to Richmond and Virginia Beach Oct. 13 and 20

Hundreds of Virginia Women Will ‘Run Like A Girl’ to Help Fight Ovarian Cancer

Run Like A Girl is a series of women-only run and walk events that aim to increase awareness, education and funds for the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation and the organization’s mission to stop the loss of women from ovarian cancer. A portion of each Run Like A Girl entry is donated to HERA along with funds raised by participants. Run Like A Girl was founded in 2008 by Mark Junkermann and Theresa Marie Green who both lost loved ones to cancer. Today, Run Like A Girl events attract hundreds of women each year to four run/walk races in Virginia and North Carolina.

WHO:  Women and girls of all ages are invited to “Run Like A Girl” at run/walk events in Richmond and Virginia Beach. Registration is still open for individuals and teams at:

WHEN:  Sunday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. (4-mile event) – West Creek Parkway, Richmond, VA

Sunday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. (4.5-mile event) First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach, VA

WHY:  Run Like A Girl events benefit the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation, which provides funding for cutting-edge research grants for ovarian cancer to scientists at respected medical institutions around the country. The organization also embraces projects related to raising awareness about ovarian cancer and its symptoms in different communities around the country.

According to the American Cancer Society in 2013, one in 72 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime. With early detection about 94 percent will survive longer than five years, however, only 20 percent of ovarian cancer is caught early. Currently, there is NO early detection test for ovarian cancer. Over 78 percent of the women diagnosed in 2013 will be diagnosed after the disease has spread when the chance for survival is less than 20 percent.

INTERVIEWS: Interview requests can be made through race day with event organizers and participants as well as HERA representatives. To set up an interview or for more information, please contact Stacey Sepp with Xstatic Public Relations at (303) 928-7144 or (720) 299-5891.
