Get Your Teal On

August 23, 2011

September is National Ovarian Cancer month, and the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation is getting the word out. HERA’s mission is to stop the loss of women from ovarian cancer by promoting Health, Empowerment, Research and Awareness. One in 71 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime. It affects mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. With early detection 90% will survive, but, currently, only 20% of ovarian cancer is caught early. Estimates for ovarian cancer in the United States for 2011: about 21,900 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed and about 15,460 deaths will occur. It ranks fifth as the cause of cancer deaths in women (Source: American Cancer Society). The signs and symptoms are quite common and often overlooked, but early detection can save lives.  As an on-going supporter of the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation, we’re asking everyone to help raise awareness about the disease.

What can you do to help?

Join us for the 10th Annual Climb4LifeSM Utah on September 15-18 in Salt Lake City. Come help us celebrate 10 years of climbing and hiking in the beautiful Salt Lake valley while raising funds for ovarian cancer research. As part of this very special weekend, HERA is proud to welcome Dr. Robert Kurman, Director of Gynecologic Pathology and Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University, who will discuss the latest in ovarian cancer research. Dr. Kurman will be speaking at the Huntsman Cancer Institute on Friday, Sept. 16. Climb4Life registration fees are $75 for the weekend, or $60 for one day only. More details and registration are available on-line at:

Do a little shopping.

Purchase something teal from one of HERA’s Partners in Action and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation. Don’t have anything to wear? The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is selling a variety of teal products to show your support.

Go elaborate or keep it simple.

You can host a HERA event, or simply make a donation.  Get other great ideas to promote National Ovarian Cancer month by reading September Memories and Musings posted on the HERA website.

The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  As a nationally recognized ovarian cancer organization, HERA provides funding for cutting-edge research grants to scientists at respected medical institutions.  In so doing, HERA attracts more young researchers to expand the scientific understanding of ovarian cancer while encouraging collaboration and improving the lives of those battling the disease.  In addition, HERA awards grants to local community groups to raise awareness about the disease in novel and unusual ways.  More information is available at

September is right around the corner, so help spread the word.
