Lizz Zanin Tackles a Triathlon for HERA

June 7, 2011

Angela and Lizz ZaninThis July 17, I’m competing in my first half-Ironman Triathlon!!  A little crazy I know, but it seemed like a good idea back in November when I signed up.  The Vineman 70.3 triathlon will take place in Sonoma, CA, and for this race I’ve teamed up with the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation just to add a little more pressure to me crossing that finish line!

Although I’m waaaay behind in my training, I’m super excited to complete my first Ironman in honor of my mom and my Grandma who both fought a courageous battle against ovarian cancer.  The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation raises funds to provide scientific research grants to study the disease.

In just 6 short weeks I’ll swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles, all in one day!!   Let’s be honest, though.  The distances are far, but my biggest challenge will be fighting the urge to pull off at a winery for tasting mid-race!  Now THAT’S will power!!

But seriously, it’s during the toughest times of my training and racing that I’m able to draw so much from the strength my mom showed during her treatments time and time again.  Truly, this race is nothing compared to what these brave woman battle when they fight this type of cancer.  I also think of all of you out on the course that continually and so generously support me with each endeavor.  I’m merely the catalyst—YOU are the real heroes that donate to my favorite charities and give them the ability to function and grow.  I am totally sincere when I say a $5 or $10 donation is incredibly generous in my eyes.  I’ve always believed that charity is not about breaking the bank or making a donation uncomfortable to your means.  Of course $5 alone isn’t going to make a dent in ovarian cancer research, but think about how powerful your $5 becomes when combined with hundreds or thousands of others!  Click here to make your on-line donation and support my triathlon now.

If you can’t give financially right now, I’d still love your help.  Please take a moment to forward this message to all of the women you love in your life.  Join the fight by helping to educate women on the symptoms of ovarian cancer and what they can do to help protect themselves.  Continuing to educate women on this disease is something I promised my mom I would do.  Your help spreading awareness would truly be the greatest way you could support me and honor my mom!

And if now is just not a good time for you and you can’t donate and you’re too busy to forward this message, I will gladly accept prayers to any god of your choice on race day!

Thanks again for always reminding me how truly blessed I am, and how much love and support I have in my life.

Much love and thanks always,
