HERA Seeks Development Director

HERA is seeking a development director to add to the HERA team.  This position will help grow the organization, and support our mission to stop the loss of women from ovarian cancer.  Take a look at the job description:

Background:  HERA is a nationally recognized non-profit ovarian cancer organization that provides funding for cutting-edge research grants to scientists at respected medical institutions. In doing so, HERA promotes cross-disciplinary science and seeks to attract young researchers to expand the scientific understanding of ovarian cancer while improving the lives of those battling this disease.  The projects funded focus on mechanisms of ovarian cancer development, growth, and treatment.

HERA also embraces projects related to raising awareness about ovarian cancer and its symptoms in different communities around the country. By stressing the concept of “community,” HERA supports and empowers those undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer, as well as women who are healthy.

Via its signature Climb4LifeSM and auxiliary fundraising events, coupled with funding from multiple other sources, HERA remains committed to investing at least 85% of the monies raised each year in programs that continue to provide research, awareness, education and community support.

In brief, the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation aspires to continually expand its sphere of influence and touch the lives of all those affected by ovarian cancer.

Position Profile:  HERA is a national organization, as such our focus is national.  We are looking for a Director of Development who can grow the organization from its current annual revenues by 200K in recurring annual revenue over the next 2 years.

We are looking for someone who has experience growing development and fundraising opportunities for organizations focused on stopping the loss of lives from cancer and/or who has experience fundraising for women’s based health organizations.

The HERA Director of Development will provide direction and oversight for new fundraising campaigns including but not limited to: new HERA events and sponsorships, individual giving, corporation and foundation giving, government grants, special events, major gifts, legacy giving., the annual campaign and  online fundraising programs and Board giving.

New HERA events are defined as events that align to HERA’s mission–Health, Empowerment, Research and Awareness–our values and demographic.  Examples of new HERA events include:

  • Expanding the Climb4Life (HERA copyrighted) event into new a new geography/gym and/or new climbing outdoor venue with a first year net revenue of over $25,000.  Operating budgets for C4L events are aggressively managed and follow guidelines established by eleven years of operating both indoor and outdoor events.
  • Bringing in a new event where HERA is the sponsor/operator/beneficiary and/or the co-sponsor/beneficiary, in whole or in part, of the revenue and fundraising.  In events where HERA is obligated to an organizational cost (examples of costs include time/effort of HERA staff to include ED, marketing etc., Kintera site usage, printed or promotional  materials), the gross revenues must exceed the costs by no less than a factor of 10).
  • Bringing in an event where HERA is the beneficiary in whole or in part of the revenue and/or fundraising.
  • Bringing in corporate donations unrelated to existing matching giving programs for donors who apply for matching through their organizations.
  • Bringing in grants that align to our mission.
  • Existing campaigns, events, and sponsorships, etc. will continue to be managed by existing staff and will not be the focus of this position.  Developing new campaigns, events, sponsorships, etc. is the primary focus of this position.

All new proposed events and/or grant obligations would require the review and approval of the Executive Committee, a subset of the Board or Directors.

The Development Director will report to and be managed by the Board Treasurer.   The Development Director will work with the Executive Committee members for review and approval of development strategy, events and support.

Expanding HERA Community: HERA needs to expand the population of HERA friends, donors, participants and volunteers beyond the existing membership.  Membership is currently based on registration for or donation to a HERA sponsored events and those supporting events where participants actively fundraised through HERA’s Kintera site.

  • The Director of Development should also focus on the expansion of the HERA community to support growth in the effectiveness of the annual campaign.
  • The Director of Development should also focus on legacy giving.

The specific responsibilities for the Director of Development are:

  • Provide strategic leadership for all development and fundraising activities; Operational support for HERA events will be provided by the Executive Director, HERA staff, Board members and volunteers.
  • Identify new fundraising campaigns including but not limited to: new HERA events and sponsorship, individual giving, corporation and foundation giving, government grants, sponsorships, special events, major gifts, legacy giving, the annual campaign, online programs and Board giving.
  • Be effective at representing HERA Foundation’s mission, goals, values, history, aspirations and passion for stopping the loss of women’s lives to ovarian cancer.
  • Be an effective spokesperson for HERA Foundation through public speaking at events, outreach to organizations and individuals, in media/interviews both in writing and in person; have excellent communication skills.
  • Work with the Executive Committee & Executive Director to set funding priorities
  • Identify, solicit, and cultivate prospective corporate, foundation, and individual donors and/or other high-profile relationships.
  • Develop and grow a major gifts program, including personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospects for major gifts.
  • Identify opportunities for corporate sponsorships and additional event and promotion opportunities for Special Events.
  • Identify mechanisms to increase participant support and stewardship that leads to high retention and excellence in fundraising by our event participants
  • Support the Executive Committee in the evaluation the effectiveness of the on-going fundraising campaign(s), including fundraising efficiency (cost/expense), community engagement, event satisfaction, and overall success of the campaign.
  • Oversee all development-related communications including but not limited to: proposals, brochures, donor & event participant correspondence, newsletters and the development portion of the website.
  • Alongside the Executive Director, establish and promote a cause marketing strategy and campaign.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Committee.

The Director of Development will encompass the following qualifications:

  • BA/BS required, Master’s preferred.
  • 5+ yrs diverse development experience with a proven track record, 3 yrs Mgt exp.
  • Experience with major gift programs of $25k+.
  • High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail.
  • High degree of initiative and professionalism.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Hands-on, proactive business partner who is driven by results.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Likability & sense of humor.
  • Strong interest in health, active lifestyle and/or outdoor sports industry and ability to grow relationships within.

Work Location:  The position is a National Position, work location is remote.

Compensation:  Compensation will be performance based in accordance with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Principles and Standards.
